What is eczema?

It is unfortunately a common skin condition that affects 10-20% of children.  Why?  It is unknown but if there is a history of eczema or asthma family, it is more likely that your child will develop one of these conditions.  No cure has been developed yet but there are plenty of ways to keep it under manageable.  The symptoms of eczema include angry red, hot, dry and itchy rash, it can affect your whole body and can be mild, moderate or severe.  Children will often scratch and these areas can easily become infected and need medical treatment.  When the rash first begins it normally affects your child’s face, cheeks and chin become angry red, dry, and itchy (made worse by dribbling and saliva irritating the skin).  It can also develop on your child’s whole body. As your child grows the eczema is more likely to be on the limbs and trunk.  At school age the eczema tends to target hot areas of the body eg. neck creases, elbows, knees and buttocks for similar reasons.

What aggravates eczema?

Heat, letting the skin get dry and prickle aggravate eczema.  Keep your child cool, apply plenty of moisturiser and dress them in loose, light cotton or bamboo clothing and blankets.

How will i know if my child's eczema is infected and what should i do if it is?

When eczema gets infected it will crust (normally yellow in colour), it might weep, and is normally a sudden change in the eczema.  It might be itchier than normal painful to touch.  In severe cases your child might find it hard to extend their elbows or knees.  It is common for children with uncontrollable eczema to get secondary infections. The reasons behind eczema becoming infected is usually because the child scratches and breaks the skin.  One small infected area can flare other areas of eczema.

If you believe the eczema to be infected go to your family doctor and have the infected areas swabbed and treated.

Active Ingredient: Colloidal Oatmeal 2.5%

Colloidal Oatmeal: Clinically tested and is approved for use by the FDA as a safe over-the-counter skin protectant. Colloidal oatmeal has been clinically proven to have an anti-itch affect. It soothes, softens, reduces water loss and moisturises skin thereby reducing redness and irritation. Colloidal oatmeal works great to help relieve dry, skin patches and more importantly Eczema. It provides a very soft silky finish to cream.

Cocoa Butter: Has exceptionally high emollient properties due to its source of functinal lipids.

Shea Butter: Given its high content in anti-inflammatory and healing components, Shea butter helps the healing of skin disorders and problems like eczema and psoriasis.

Olive Oil: In Greece, olive oil has been used as a topical skincare agent for many centuries. Olive oil is a powerful antioxidant that contains the vitamins A and E, as well as the monounsaturated fatty acids that make it an anti-inflammatory.  The emollients in olive oil make it a soothing moisturizer. Olive oil emulsifies and cleanses the buildup of dirt and debris from your skin.

Jojoba Oil: Jojoba oil's resemblance to sebum allows it to easily absorb into your skin, helping making it a gentle, softening moisturiser.  It is a treatment for a variety of skin infections due to its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.  It may also improve and help relieve an skin conditions such as psoriasis, chapped skin, sunburn and eczema.

Vitamin E: Or tocopherol, is well-known for its skin benefits and is easily absorbed into the skin and hair. Vitamin E can potentially help to promote skin cell formation. However, it is highly moisturizing, which makes it an ideal addition to shampoos and conditioners. The vitamin E content also keeps the oil from becoming rancid; thereby increasing a cosmetic or hair care product's shelf life.

Vanilla Tincture: Vanilla contains a range of complex aromatics that are used for emollients to 'smell good'. We love the vanilla in the Kids Eczema cream as it gives a beauiful yet soft aroma to the cream and to your little one.

Allantoin: Has been clinically tested to treat wounds and aid in the reduction of inflammation.

Potassium Sorbate & Sodium Benzoate: Potassium sorbate and Sodium benzoate are predominatly used as an antifungal preservatives both in food and cosmetic preparations.

Caprylic/capric triglyceride - 100% Natural These oils are 'medium chain triglycerides' extracted from coconut oil.  They have no colour, odour or taste.  Their benefits include low viscosity and thus excellent skin penetration enables effective transport of nutrients to deeper layers of the skin.  Leaves no greasy film and helps to retain moisture in the skin.  Anti-bacterial and anti-viral.  Water resistance and spreads very easily and evenly on the skin.

Bisabolol: Is a skin conditioning agent.  It improves the appearance of dehydrated, damaged skin by reducing flaking and improving suppleness to the skin.  Its high panthenol concentration can effectively stimulate and improve the skin's healing.

Sclerotium Gum: Is the ultimate natural thickening ingredient, keeping other natural ingredients stable against high heat or any other conditions that usually challenge natural gelling agents, improving the feel of the product and the skin, whilst also improving natural moisture levels.
